NHVR's Intercept Outcomes Tool, explained for owner-operators

Published July 2026 · 6 min read · General information only, not legal advice

If you haven't heard of the Intercept Outcomes Tool yet, you're not behind — it's genuinely new. The National Heavy Vehicle Regulator built it to give operators visibility of something that used to sit entirely on the regulator's side of the desk: a record of every time one of your vehicles has been pulled over by the NHVR, and what happened as a result.

What the tool actually does

The Intercept Outcomes Tool (IOT) sits inside NHVR Go and shows you the intercept history for any vehicle linked to your account — regardless of whether that stop resulted in a defect notice, an infringement, or nothing at all. For each intercept you can see the vehicle's registration, VIN or chassis number, the date, time and state it happened in, and the offence category if one was recorded. The data refreshes roughly every 24 hours, so it's close to real time rather than something you find out about months later through the mail.

Driver identity is stripped out of what the operator sees — the tool is built around the vehicle and the fleet, not naming individual drivers. It's also entirely voluntary and free to use, and it doesn't replace any of your existing record-keeping obligations. Think of it as an extra window into your own compliance history, not a new form to fill in.

Who can actually see it

Access has been rolling out in stages. It started with operators accredited under the National Heavy Vehicle Accreditation Scheme (NHVAS) earlier this year, then widened to the broader industry from mid-June 2026. To use it you need an NHVR Go account with your fleet linked and your identity verified, and an admin on the account has to specifically authorise which users can view the Intercept Outcomes report — it isn't switched on by default just because you have NHVR Go.

One practical wrinkle worth knowing: the tool can only show what NHVR's own systems have recorded, and only intercepts from 1 January 2021 onward. If a defect was issued very recently, or the record sits with a state transport authority from before the handover to NHVR, it might not show up yet. Don't take an empty result as proof nothing has ever happened — it may just mean the data hasn't caught up.

Why this actually matters for a one or two truck operation

For years, the flow of intercept information has run one way: the officer knows what happened at the roadside, and the operator finds out later, if at all, usually through a defect notice arriving in the mail. This tool flips part of that. If your driver is intercepted on a Tuesday, you can potentially see it before they've even finished the trip — rather than three weeks later when a letter turns up.

That matters most for two things: spotting patterns before they become a habit (say, the same vehicle keeps getting stopped for the same defect category), and having your own copy of the compliance record rather than relying entirely on paperwork that can go missing in a glovebox. It also gives you something concrete to bring into a conversation with your insurer or an NHVAS auditor, since the data comes straight from the regulator rather than your own notes.

What to do this week

Three things worth ten minutes each:

  1. Log into (or set up) your NHVR Go account and check whether your vehicles are linked.
  2. If you're the account admin, authorise yourself — or the right person — to view the Intercept Outcomes ORPP report under Manage Customer Account → Users.
  3. Have a look at what's there. If something looks off or a vehicle isn't showing intercepts you know happened, contact NHVR directly rather than assuming the tool is wrong.

None of this replaces the actual record-keeping the Heavy Vehicle National Law requires of you — pre-start inspections, fatigue records, and (from 1 August) a documented Safety Management System still need to exist independently. What the IOT gives you is a second, regulator-verified source of truth to check your own records against. If you're still keeping that record on paper or trying to remember it, this is a reasonable moment to ask whether there's a simpler way — which is exactly the gap CoRShield was built to close: your pre-start, fatigue diary and SMS documentation done from a text message, with nothing to log into.
